Throughout your life, you’ve probably been told to “drink more water” more often than not. It is one of the best things we can do for our body. Water seems to be the cure to a plethora of things, both when you’re sick or just trying to maintain your current health. This ubiquitous liquid seems to be the essence of life, so in that sense, can water also help to aid the growth of your hair? Let’s discuss it below.

    Your Entire Body Uses Water

Did you know that the average percentage of water in a human’s body is 60%? Water, or H2O, is one of the principal chemical components of our bodies. We need water for them to function properties—that is, your cells and organs need water in order to do their jobs. Water aids in lubricating your joints, helping to remove bodily waste, and keeping your body temperature at a normal level (just to name a few tasks). If you're not drinking enough water daily, this can lead to dehydration, whereby your body does not have enough water to carry out these functions. The healthy amount of water for an average adult to drink is anywhere from 8-15 cups, depending on your gender, age, and lifestyle. You can also receive water from other fluids and foods you consume. A telltale sign that you are hydrated is if you have a dry mouth accompanied with a headache and/or very dark colored urine.

    How Does Water Affect Hair?

In relation to your hair, having a dry scalp and dandruff can directly correlate with not drinking enough water. But more concerningly, and as we mentioned, if you are not drinking enough water, your body cannot properly carry out the functions it needs to. When you are dehydrated, your body will redirect the water supply to the most vital functions. Your hair is lower in terms of your body’s prioritization in these instances, so that means that your hair will be struggling.

A lack of hydration can lead to your hair becoming brittle and susceptible to breakage, and hinder hair growth, or at least the appearance it. Water is necessary to promote blood circulation and healthy oil production on your scalp. Without these two components, your hair follicles will have a hard time with hair growth.

Essentially, staying hydrated helps your body in every way. Every system of your body is able to excel when you are replenishing your body with H2O, and in that way, drinking water will help with hair growth and essentially all other functions.

What Else Can You Do to Keep Your Hair Healthy?

The other ways you can keep your hair healthy in addition to drinking enough water are:

    • Don't over- or under-wash: If you over-wash your hair, you may be confusing your body by removing a lot of the necessary natural oils your scalp produces. On the other hand, if you aren’t washing your hair enough, this can cause a build-up of dirt and oil which will harm your scalp’s health. Thinning hair requires some attention with regard to washing frequency.
    • Protect your scalp: UV rays can end up burning your scalp if you’re not careful. Consider using a hat if you’re planning on sitting out in the sun for a while. Chlorine is also known to dry out hair, so wearing a swimming cap can also provide protection.
    • Use the right shampoos for your hair: So many drugstore shampoos can be filled with harsh chemicals that end up having adverse effects on your hair and scalp. Be mindful of what ingredients are in your hair care products and be proactive in picking one that serves your hair type well.
    • Use a nourishing oil on dry scalps: If you have a drier scalp or hair that needs moisturization, try using a naturally moisturizing oil (such as coconut oil) in the shower in order to give your hair a boost.

So, Does Hydration Help Hair Growth?

By staying properly hydrated and drinking the amount of water that your body needs, it will be able to function better than it would when you are dehydrated. Water is hard to imagine our lives without, so take advantage of this miracle liquid and reap the many benefits it has! You will notice a difference from top to bottom when you are staying hydrated.
